@LucidWombat They are purposeful because they come from God. They are absolute because they come from an unchanging God. Human beings are able to distinguish right from wrong, i.e. they recognise the virtue of moral absolutes (from God) and know them to be good. However, in their sinful state they do only wrong. Faith in Jesus Christ results in a new heart and a new mind. Prior to becoming a Christian I had the inability to not sin. Any “good” I did was as a result of self-righteousness and self-justification. I did conform and make use of moral absolutes, yes, but my motive for doing so was wrong. Now that God has saved me and given me a new heart I have the ability to not sin. The presence of sin is still with me (I am not perfect), but the power of sin over my life is broken.
